Happy Monday Tribies!
Warning: Great big long story that is worth your read.
Last week I shared our theme for June: Do hard things and make ourselves proud. Get uncomfortable and achieve goals.
Well this weekend my brother-in-law really injected me with inspiration and motivation to really make the most of our June theme.
On Saturday at 8am he started running in a 24 hour event.
It was held at a 400m running track and he (along with about 100 other people) ran laps of this track for either 24 or 48 hours.
I offered to support him and give my sister a break and sleep from 2am until 8am on Sunday morning.
So I got up at 1.30am and headed out to the track (which is called 'The Ridge' because it sits on a ridge in the middle of the bush and catches all the weather (it's winter here and so cold)).
My brother-in-law had set 2 goals. His first goal was 100km (he'd never run more than 50km in his life) and his 2nd goal was 120km.
Soon after I got there he hit his 100km goal.
We celebrated, my sister went to bed (on a stretcher next to me) and he kept going.
I asked him what number he was thinking about in his head and he said with certainty "I'll get past 120km".
I knew then he was going to smash his goal. He was SO focused and certain. He had SO much belief that he would make it.
Let me confirm, it wasn't easy. He had already run/walked 100km!
He was tired (not slept) and he had some pain. But he kept going.
And he kept believing he was going to achieve his goal.
I watched all the other competitors running/walking/shuffling past, lap after lap, so many different shapes and sizes, ages and walks of life, and I was considering "what do all these very different people have in common?". They were all SO different. But they all (were crazy) and had the mindset, a thought or many thoughts that got them to that point. (3 people ran over 300km)
It's fascinating to witness the mental game being won and lost on the track. They had multiple thoughts that kept them going through the event or had them pull out.
I swear there was one woman who was sleep walking around the track.
My brother-in-law reached his 120km goal by 6.30am.
It was a massive celebration (see the video where I filmed the moment).
Far out what an achievement to witness at 6.30am on a Sunday morning in the middle of the bush.
After celebrating his wildest dream goal he kept going.
He kept going around and around the track to discover what was possible. To realise his full potential.
From 7am after he had achieved his big goal he picked up his pace!
He started running faster and taking less breaks.
He had chosen a new goal, adjusted his thoughts and was going for it.
With 35 minutes and 5km til 130km I threw a thought at him that I thought might help him
"35 minutes and 1 park run to go".
Breaking our goals down to bite size chunks is always helpful, especially at the 125km mark.
He kept running.
I started supporting him at both sides of the field. I'd cheer for him on one side then run to the other side to be there to cheer some more as he passed.
I was offering thoughts that he could think as he ran around.
"keep going"
"you've got this"
"every step counts"
"keep moving"
"ever single step"
"it's incredible, YOU are incredible"
"YES John YES!"
They countdown on the loudspeaker and when they get to zero the competitors stop where they are then their official distance is calculated.
Guess what my brother-in-law achieved?!?!
No he didn't make it to 130km.
He achieved 129.99km!
******************
I still can't believe it.
I can't believe he was 1m off 130km AND I can't believe he ran 129.99km!
ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVEABLE.
Absolutely Incredible.
What an achievement.
What an inspiration.
Notice the ***** above. That critical point is where we get to decide how we want to think about it.
To be disappointed or proud.
This may seem like an easy decision for you reading this story BUT I want you to notice it is a moment we make a decision and that decision determines how we feel.
YOU have these moments every day, week...all the time.
Example: You set a plan and show up to it for 5 days. you lose weight each day. On the 6th day you show up to your plan until 4pm then you have something off plan. You wake up on the 7th day, weigh yourself and your weight has gone up overnight. ********* cue critical moment you decide what you think about this.
A) I've had such a great week even thought last night I ate off plan. Overall my weight is down, I'm so proud of me.
B) I've had such a great week until last night when I threw it all away, stuffed it all up. What's wrong with me? Why can't I stick to my plan? I'm never going to lose weight.
As we move through June, the month of doing hard things and making ourselves proud. Getting uncomfortable and achieving goals, I want you to be noticing those ***** moments, observing your brains natural thought AND THEN deciding to choose a thought that serves you.
Don't judge your initial thought, just acknowledge it and change it (if you need to).
If you JUST focus on choosing thoughts that serve you this month, you will make progress both on and off the scales.
Let's make ourselves proud this June!
This week we're doing a Fast 5 Challenge. 5 awesome days, setting a plan, showing up to it and making progress.
Here's How
This week Sally posted
"Woo hoo, i fit into my next size down jeans!!"
She also posted that she had gained weight yesterday.
I wanted to Spotlight Sally as she keeps on showing up. She's been showing up for herself for 6 weeks now and I want to highlight how up and down it has been but also how she's making progress.
I hope you don't mind Sally and you see, as we step back and look at the bigger picture, that you are making great progress even when it doesn't feel like you are.
I've used Sally's Friday check in for the past 6 weeks.
